Picked up the Rent DVD this weekend! YAY. Is it possible to love it even more on second viewing? Cause I totally do. My only problem with the movie was the lack of Benny and the DVD totally fixes that. The deleted scenes include a few with Benny, in particular one where he and Roger talk about Mimi. This scene redeems Benny in my eyes and I wish they had left it in because the movie ends without really showing us his good side. They also included the deleted performances of Halloween and Goodbye Love (*sniff* I thought this was great, especially the parts between Mark and Roger).

I also watched Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and March of the Penguins. Maybe it's just me but I don't understand the hype for either movie. Charlie had its moments (some funny and some... not so funny) but mostly I thought it was strange. And I didn't like Willy Wonka's flashbacks to his childhood. At all. And then, March of the Penguins. I was kinda bored. And I just don't understand why the penguins don't evolve so their breeding ground is closer to the water. :/ Anyway, we just got Just Like Heaven from Netflix. I'm looking forward to a fun and fluffy romantic comedy. Plus, Reese!

SQUEE. The results of the ladies figure skating competition are pretty awesome.

Since Michelle Kwan withdrew from the competition, I didn't have a favorite for the gold... I just wanted to see some good skating! Didn't really get that -- in fact, I think this Olympics was kind of lackluster compared to the last 4. It wasn't the best day for the top skaters (oh Sasha -- I really wanted her to skate cleanly; she has such a problem with putting 2 clean performances together) but I am SO SO HAPPY that Shizuka Arakawa won.

Worlds next month! That should be fun. :D

OMG. The Project Runway reunion show is HILARIOUS. BEST THING EVER. It also made my Zulema hate flare up and I officially think Daniel Franco is creepy. Also, what was up with Guadalupe? She was drunk or stoned. Probably both. Oh man. That was SO MUCH fun.

Anyway, books! Here's my update for February...

03. General's Daughter by Nelson DeMille, 512 p
I am loving Nelson DeMille's books right now. This is an engaging and actually, really sad military detective story. I loved all the layers to the mystery and just COULD NOT put it down. Highly recommended.

04. School of Dreams by Edward Humes, 400 p
I only read this book because it's about my former high school (a small public magnet school in southern CA -- Whitney High). I wanted to see what a journalist would have to say about WHS after spending a year amongst the students. It definitely didn't capture *my* high school experience but that's not what it's about. Instead, the book is a study about the reasons for Whitney's success and why its students do so well. It's an interesting read.

05. A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray, 432 p
This was recced to me by Sarah. It was a much darker book than I thought it would be but I loved it. My only complaint is that some things aren't fully explained (ie. the purpose of the Order and what Gemma means to them) but I assume that's because this book was always meant to have a sequel. I don't know if I can wait for Rebel Angels to be released in paperback -- I want some answers!

Right now I'm reading another Nelson DeMille book called Spencerville. So far, so good. :)

February 21, 2006

So I wasn't going to watch the ladies figure skating competition (still sad about Michelle Kwan not being able to compete *sob*) but... I'm a sucker.

Some thoughts as I was watching...

Kimmie Meissner - Very clean program. Good for her. I think she'll be a force to be reckoned with if she sticks it out another 4 years to get to Vancouver. Right now, she has the technique down but I think she needs to work on her artistry. I just don't connect with her skating. It's too formulaic. I don't see her medalling in these Games but she should easily be in the Top 8 or 10.

Elena Sokolova - :( She's been around a long time... that must have been such a disappointing skate.

Elene Gedevanishvili - WOW! Where did she come from? She was totally awesome. So enthusiastic and explosive. Loved her. I can't wait to see more of her.

Emily Hughes - Loved her costume... didn't love her program that much. She had a lot of heart and really attacked her skate but most of the time, she looked like she was flailing her arms around. So distracting.

Irina Slutskaya - I've never loved her skating but she is amazingly talented. She has so much speed and power on the ice. I just can't relate to her performances, though. It seems like she's out there jumping and spinning and not really connecting with the audience. But barring a major mistake, I'm sure she'll be on the podium.

Shizuka Arakawa - She's so awesome. I loved when she won the gold at 2004 Worlds. She's in a good position after the short program.

Fumie Suguri - Aww, I loved her. She's one of those skaters who reminds me why I love the sport. Her choreography and artistry is so beautiful. She's my personal favorite for a medal. SQUEE. PLUS. Her costume was gorgeous.

Sasha Cohen - Yay! It is SO HARD to be a fan of hers. She has the technique, flexibility, grace... but she is also incredibly inconsistent (and sometimes she strikes me as a diva -- but that's neither here nor there). It's frustrating. When it counts, she can't seem to keep it together. But she found a way to be perfect tonight. So great. Now I'm just praying she doesn't meltdown during her long program. Cause that would be typical. :(

Bring on the long program!

Also? The Torino medals look like CDs! Hee.

February 18, 2006

So I know Valentine's Day is over... but I can't resist taking a page out of TV Gal's book and making a list of my Top 10 Favorite Kisses (one per couple). Complete with pictures!

1. Pacey & Joey, Dawson's Creek

Joey: I think I'm in love with you.
Pacey: You think or you know?
Joey: I know. I've known it since the moment you kissed me and maybe even before that. As scary as it is, I don't want to deny it anymore, Pacey. I don't want to run from it and I don't want to let it run from me.

MY OTP! Joey finally listens to her heart and she and Pacey share a kiss before they sail away for the summer on the season 3 finale, True Love.

2. Ephram & Amy, Everwood

Ephram: You're it, Amy. You're the one I want to be with. There's no questioning it, no holding it back, no overanalyzing it. It just is.

These 2 finally get their timing together on the season 2 finale, The Day Is Done.

3. Tony & Michelle, 24

Tony: Baby, you're alive. And nobody else got hurt because of what I did. Now that's more than I hoped for. I can live with that. Even in prison.

This scene from the season 3 finale hurt. Tony put Michelle's life before his job and national security... and he pays a steep price for his love. JUST. Guh.

4. Nathan & Haley, One Tree Hill

Haley: You know I keep... I keep putting myself out there and you keep blowing it. And it's probably a good thing because at this point there's nothing that you can say or do that will surprise me.
[Nathan kisses her.]
Haley: Except that.

Nathan and Haley had their first kiss in The Search For Something More (episode 108) and it was everything I hoped for.

5. Jess & Joe, Bend It Like Beckham

Joe: Look, I can't let you go without knowing.
Jess: What?
Joe: That even with the distance, and the concerns of your family, we might still have something. Don't you think?

This kiss didn't take me by surprise like their first but it made me absolutely giddy. It's just *such* a hopeful kiss.

6. Anne & Gilbert, Anne of Avonlea

Anne: I don't want marble halls and sunbursts, all I want is you.

Awww, my favorite literary couple. They had a relationship that was destined from the start. This kiss was monumental. And really, about time.

7. Buffy & Angel, Angel

This kiss from I Will Remember You (episode 108) kills me dead. It should be a really satisfying kiss but knowing what happens later in the episode... *sob* A completely happy moment that only one of them will remember. :(

8. Seth & Summer, The OC

This kiss in Rainy Day Women (episode 214) is so adorable that I can forgive the high cheese factor. After half the season apart, I can't help but SQUEE! as Seth and Summer kiss to a great cover of Champagne Supernova by Matt Pond PA.

9. Ross & Rachel, Friends

This long-awaited kiss is one of the definitive moments of the series. Their fight just melts away...

10. Sydney & Vaughn, Alias

With the destruction of SD-6 at their feet, Sydney and Vaughn can finally let their feelings for one another come to the surface in Phase One (episode 213). Just a look and they come together. No words necessary.

So that's it! :) Now your turn -- I'd love to hear about everyone else's favorite fandom kisses.

I am inconsolable. :( I know Michelle Kwan didn't have the greatest chance at winning gold but she was my sentimental favorite. I *love* watching her skate and I was hoping she would at least pull off a brilliant short program and free skate.

*sniff*

February 9, 2006

Every year I swear I won't watch any more awards shows... but I always do.

Brief Grammy's comments...

Yay! Kelly Clarkson won for Best Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album. She was too cute when she picked up her first award cause she couldn't stop crying! It was like her American Idol win all over again. Awww. Her Because of You performance was great too. I'm so proud. *sniff*

From one Idol to another... What was Fantasia doing there anyway?!? She still bugs me.

When Kanye West speaks, I cringe. But when he performs, I'm all smiles. He's so great on stage. It doesn't hurt that Gold Digger is such a catchy song. The marching band and the step showdown were a nice touch. JFU! hehe.

I also managed to watch Lost tonight. I used to be on the fence about Sawyer and now I'm decidedly... not. He's moved over to my "hate" list along with Charlie and Ana Lucia. Good going.

February 5, 2006

Didn't watch the Super Bowl but I do want to say that I think Hines Ward is cuuuute.

So I found a new show this weekend... Project Runway! I only saw the last 4 episodes but I'm totally hooked. I can't believe I managed to stay away this long. It's about Fashion! And Clothes! Otherwise known as stuff I love! Right now my favorite designer is Daniel. From what I've seen, he would have an awesome runway show. I also really like Chloe. Her designs are simple and not really anything mind-blowing but there's just something very relatable and wearable about them. They would translate really well to "real life." The PR show is this coming Friday at Fashion Week. I can't wait to see the designs for the Top 3! I blame this new obsession all on Rob (yes, my boyfriend!) and Nicola. THANKYOUVERYMUCH.

I am now caught up on One Tree Hill... am I the only one who cringes during scenes between Brooke and Lucas? And no, not because I don't like the pairing... but because it seems so awkward to watch Sophia Bush and Chad Michael Murray in romantic situations. I know they're professionals but they're getting a divorce! That just seems harsh.

And because Alie said so... ;)

February 2, 2006

So it looks casting has been completed for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Hmm. The actresses cast for Luna and Tonks look *nothing* like the way I imagined the characters. I can't really pinpoint why. I'd love to see a picture of the actress who was cast for Bellatrix Lestrange. I've always imagined her to be absolutely gorgeous... in an evil way, of course.

Anyway, they start filming on Monday! Yay!

February 1, 2006

So on Wednesday mornings, one of the first things I do at work (after I check my email, of course :P) is read Ask Ausiello. I usually love reading the bits of spoilers but today's column has me upset...

Question: I am freaking out! What is happening to Everwood now that WB has merged with UPN? - AJ

Ausiello: I have some really depressing news on that subject, but first some much-needed good news: WB announced Tuesday that Everwood will return to its original Monday time period next month, beginning with a two-hour episode on March 20. (Supernatural heads to Thursdays after Smallville - a much better fit, if you ask me.) Now, back to the bad news: According to one of my industry moles, an early draft of CW's fall schedule is making the rounds in Hollywood, and Everwood is not on it. Now, that doesn't mean it won't be back next season, but it's certainly proof that TV's most underappreciated drama series is fighting for its life.

*sob*

NOOOOOO.

On a happier note, yay for Michelle Williams's Oscar nomination! I'm so proud. :D
